Expressway 83 (I-2) is one of the busiest roads in the Rio Grande Valley, and wrecks there happen every day. What you do in the first few days after a crash can make a big difference in your claim.
- Get checked by a doctor. Neck, back and head injuries often show up a day or two later. A gap in treatment is one of the first things an adjuster will use against you.
- Get the crash report. Texas crash reports can be bought online from TxDOT, usually within about 10 days of the crash.
- Photograph everything. Take pictures of the vehicles, skid marks, traffic signals and your injuries as they heal.
- Do not give a recorded statement. The other driver's insurer may call within hours. You do not have to give them a recorded statement.
- Be careful on social media. Photos and posts can be taken out of context.
- Track your losses. Keep medical bills, receipts, mileage to appointments and records of missed work.
- Watch the deadline. Most Texas injury claims must be filed within two years. Claims involving a government vehicle can require notice within six months or less.
